Duke University President
Vincent E. Price announced this week that Vice President and King-Compton Families Director of Athletics
Nina King has been appointed to a new term ending June 30, 2031.
The reappointment follows a regular review conducted by a committee composed of administrators, faculty members, and representatives of the Board of Trustees. The review committee was chaired by
Gary Bennett, dean of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences.
"
Nina King has provided extraordinary leadership of Duke Athletics during an especially volatile period in intercollegiate athletics, and I'm delighted that she will continue in this role," said Price. "Nina has led our student-athletes, coaches, and staff in achieving excellence in athletic competition and the student academic experience. In addition, she has played an influential role in shaping the future of college athletics nationwide."
As vice president and King-Compton Families director of athletics, King oversees 27 varsity sports programs, is responsible for all aspects of the department's financial and operating performance, and provides strategic vision and direction for Duke Athletics. She also oversees the Recreation & Physical Education Program and the Duke University Golf Course. In addition, King teaches a sports business course in Duke's Fuqua School of Business as part of Duke's MBA program.
King, who serves on several ACC and Duke University committees, was selected as a member of the 2025-28 USA Basketball Board of Directors and serves on the Board of Directors for Women Leaders in Sports, the National Association of the Collegiate Directors of Athletics, and the Collegiate Women Sports Awards. Previously, King served as the chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee for two years (2020-22), and was a member of the NCAA Committee on Institutional Performance.
Since her appointment, King has:
- Led Duke Athletics through one of the most disruptive periods in the history of college sports;
- Ensured that Duke provides a world-class student-athlete experience, balancing competitive success, academic achievement, and career development;
- Led Duke's work to adapt to the changing landscape of college sports, including developing a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) model that supports student-athletes and aligns with Duke's values;
- Launched and expanded initiatives focused on student-athlete mental health and well-being;
- Oversaw transitions of nine new head coaches and their staffs; and
- Guided Duke to continued competitive success, capturing 11 ACC titles since 2021-2022 and finishing 10th in the 2024-2025 Learfield Directors' Cup, marking one of the program's best overall performances in recent years.
During her tenure, Duke Athletics has maintained one of the nation's top graduation success rates, finishing in the top five of Power 5 institutions, with multiple programs consistently achieving a perfect 100% graduation rate each of the past three years.
King was named Duke's vice president and director of athletics in 2021, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the university's history. (In February 2025, the King-Compton Families Athletics Directorship Endowment was established in support of Duke's principal athletics leadership position.)
She joined Duke Athletics in 2008 and held a number of key leadership positions including serving as the senior deputy director of athletics for administration and chief of staff.
Before arriving at Duke, she served as the director of rules education at the University of Notre Dame Department of Athletics.
King earned her bachelor's degree in accountancy from the University of Notre Dame and her juris doctor degree from Tulane Law School.
