DURHAM – No. 11 Duke (1-2) dropped its opening series of the season to Cincinnati (2-1), falling to the Bearcats 19-5 on Sunday afternoon.
Cincinnati opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, scoring three runs on four walks. In the bottom of the frame, Duke responded as
Macon Winslow hit a two-run home run to left center field, the first of the season, 3-2.
The Bearcats answered in the top of the third, scoring three more runs to their tally, before
Kyle Johnson hit a solo home run to left field, 6-3. Both sides traded runs to push the score to 8-4 before the Bearcats scored nine unanswered runs.
Junior
James Tallon made his first start of the season, the second of his career, working 1.2 innings. He was pegged with the loss, falling to 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cincinnati took the lead in the top of the second inning, 3-0.
- In the bottom of the second inning, Macon Winslow hit a two-run home run to left center field, 3-2.
- The Bearcats responded in the top of the third inning, 6-2.
- The Blue Devils wasted no time in the bottom of the third inning, as Kyle Johnson hit a solo home run to left field, 6-3.
- Cincinnati added a pair in the top of the fourth inning, 8-3.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, Tyler Albright tripled to right field to score Jake Berger from second, 8-4.
- The Bearcats added nine unanswered runs from the fifth to seventh innings, 17-4.
- In the bottom of the seventh inning, Albright hit a solo home run to right field, 17-5.
- Cincinnati added a pair across the final two innings to close out the contest, 19-5.
NOTES
- Eight different Blue Devil freshmen made their collegiate debut on Sunday against the Bearcats.
- Sophomore Macon Winslow hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center field in the second inning. Winslow finished the day 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
- On the first pitch he saw all season, sophomore two-way player Kyle Johnson hit a solo home run to left field. He finished his first day of action at the plate 1-for-3 with an RBI.
- Junior Tyler Albright continued his hot streak to start the season, finishing the day 2-for-3 with the first triple of the season and his second home run. Albright concludes the weekend with a 5-for-11 series, scoring four runs and driving in four RBI.
- Senior Wallace Clark capped off the weekend with a 2-for-3 line, adding a walk as the leadoff hitter in Sunday's contest. He posted a 6-for-10 line against the Bearcats, adding four walks and hitting a walk off home run on Sunday.
