LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Home runs from juniors KK Mathis and Aminah Vega helped guide No. 11 Duke (8-3) to a 9-1 run-rule victory in five innings over Loyola Marymount (3-8) Wednesday at Smith Field.

Junior Sophie Garner-MacKinnon and freshman Hailey Shuler split the circle against the Lions. Garner-MacKinnon picked up the win after working the first 3.0 innings and allowing just one hit with a pair of strikeouts. Shuler made her third appearance on the year, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Blue Devils' offense was hot from the start, adding four quick runs in the opening frame. Vega opened the scoring with an RBI-double to score classmate D'Auna Jennings, who led off with a base hit down the left-field line. Two batters after Vega, Mathis sent a three-run home run over the left field wall to push Duke ahead, 4-0.
In the top of the second, senior Ana Gold extended the gap to 6-0 with a two-RBI single to right field. Her knock scored graduate student Thessa Malau'ulu and Jennings, who reached on a triple and fielder's choice, respectively. Gold advanced to third on a groundout before coming home on an infield single from redshirt sophomore Kairi Rodriguez to stretch it to a 7-0 lead.
LMU took advantage of a Blue Devil error to push its lone run across the plate in the bottom of the second after placing runners on the corners on a hit by pitch and fielder's choice.
Vega added a two-run blast in the top of the third to round out Duke's nine runs on the night.

NOTES

Mathis tallied the 23rd home run of her career and first as a Blue Devil.
Vega sent out her first long ball of the season. She now owns 25 career home runs.
Garner-MacKinnon improves to 2-1 on the year.
The Blue Devils are 4-1 in run rule games this season, outscoring their opponents, 36-13.

UP NEXT

Duke continues its road trip to Cathedral City, Calif., for five games in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Feb. 21-23. The Blue Devils open action with a doubleheader against No. 16 Nebraska and Howard Friday at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. ET, respectively.
