VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Graduate student
Simen Guttormsen capped his indoor season with a performance for the ages, culminating a stellar campaign with a record-breaking showing en route to capturing the NCAA Indoor Championship and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America First Team honors in the men's pole vault.
Guttormsen registered a huge personal best of 5.71m (18-8.75 feet) to secure the win, shattering the previous record set in 2023. The graduate student vaulted himself into elite Blue Devil company as he became the first Duke man since 2014, and just the second overall (Curtis Beach – 2012, 2014) to win an NCAA Indoor Individual Championship.
The Ski, Norway product opened the competition clearing the first bar on the initial attempt, passing on the second height before clearing the third and fourth, respectively, on the second attempt. Guttormsen vaulted past the bar set at 5.66m on his first jump, before bowing out at a final mark of 5.71 meters – one that no one else could surpass – clearing the bar on the second jump.
Classmate
Christian Johnson took part in the men's weight throw and turned in a solid effort on the way to earning a spot on the USTFCCCA All-America Second Team. Johnson delivered his best throw on his final attempt, stepping into the cage before launching the weight 22.47m (73-8.25 feet) – good for ninth among the field.
As a team, the Duke men totaled 10 points and sit in a tie for third at the conclusion of the first day's events.
