AUSTIN, Texas – Former Duke track and field standout and recent 2025 graduate
Simen Guttormsen was recognized for his phenomenal performance in the classroom and on the field, as he was named the College Sport Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Men's Division I Track & Field/Cross Country Team Member of the Year Wednesday afternoon.
Â
"Winning an award like this means that you've accomplished something cool and that you've done something great, and doing so at a school like Duke is really fun," said Guttormsen. "It's a very high profile school with a lot of academic and athletic pressure - a lot of good athletes and academics. So, just surround yourself with good people and good things will happen."
Â
The three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection and economics and computation major (3.88 GPA) was one of four standouts headlining the phenomenal group of student-athletes tapped to the CSC's 2024-25 Academic All-America® men's track & field/cross country teams. Along with Guttormsen, the other CSC Team Members of the Year include Loic Scomparin (Division II) from the Colorado School of Mines, Basheer Alramahi of John Carroll University (Division III) and University of the Cumberlands' Luca Madeo (NAIA).
Â
Guttormsen is the seventh Duke man all-time, and the first since 2012, to garner CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-America honors. He joins the ranks of
Craig Henderson (1983),
Mike Jefferies (1984),
Sean Kelly (2002),
Brent Warner (2004),
Bo Waggoner (2010) and
Curtis Beach (2012) as the Blue Devil honorees on the men's side, while becoming the third (Beach, Warner) to earn a nod to the first team.
Â
The honor puts a bow on an outstanding 2025 campaign for the pole vaulter as he earned three gold medals and a pair of United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America First Team accolades. Following an ACC indoor title in the pole vault, the Ski, Norway product put a stamp on his star-studded indoor season as he captured the gold medal at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Guttormsen vaulted a personal best and Virginia Beach Sports Center facility record of 5.71m (18-8.75 feet) en route to becoming just the second Duke man all-time to win an indoor title.
Â
After being named the 2025 USTFCCCA Southeast Region Indoor Men's Field Performer of the Year, ACC Men's Indoor Field Performer of Year and a Bowerman Post-NCAA Indoor Championships Watch List honoree, Guttormsen capped a stellar two-year career for the Blue Devils with another strong outdoor season. The school-record holder in the men's indoor and outdoor pole vault reeled in his second consecutive outdoor title in the at the ACC Outdoor Championships, before going on to log a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to pick up his third First Team All-America accolade.
