HIGH POINT, N.C. – Event wins in the men's 110-meter hurdles, men's and women's 400-meter hurdles, women's 200 meters, men's javelin and women's long jump at the High Point Bob Davidson Team Challenge headlined the opening weekend of outdoor competition season for Duke track and field.
In addition to winning six events, the Blue Devils collected 16 podium finishes and 22 top-five placements across the two-day meet. As teams, the women placed third with 90 points while the men took fourth with 80 points.
TOP PERFORMANCES:
- Seniors Gianna Locci and Matthew Prebola led the charge for the Duke field events with first-place finishes in the women's long jump and men's javelin, respectively.
- Locci opened her outdoor season with a bang and turned in a personal best to smash the facility record. She flew out to 6.22m (20-5 feet) on her final attempt to claim the win while slotting herself No. 5 on the Duke charts.
- Prebola came through with his personal best on his second throw of the competition, launching the javelin 70.29m (230-7 feet) en route to winning the event by over 23 feet.
- The Blue Devils swept the men's and women's 400m hurdles courtesy of strong races by sophomore Andres Langston and senior Johrdyn Tarpeh. Both individuals set personal bests in the event with Langston clocking 50.71 to improve his No. 2 all-time program mark, while Tarpeh hit the tape in 1:00.54. Â
- Freshman Taylor Aska (200m) and junior Michael Scherk (110m hurdles) rounded out the Blue Devil winners, as Scherk posted a time of 14.09 and Aska dashed 23.95.
- Junior Julia Magliaro and sophomore Nathan Levine delivered impressive performances to earn runner-up finishes. Magliaro made her season debut in the women's javelin and made her third attempt the charm, delivering a throw of 50.27m (164-11 feet). Levine represented Duke in the men's high jump and finished the competition with a final of mark of 2.00m (6-6.75 feet) – clearing it on his first attempt.
- Graduate students Ewan Bradley, Elise Heddens, Allison Neiders, Liam O'Hara, Samantha Wallenstrom and Amber Wimbish comprised the rest of Duke's podium finishers at the meet with each placing third in their respective events.
- Bradley competed in the men's long jump and recorded his best jump of 6.98m (22-10.75 feet) on his fifth attempt. Neiders took part in the women's pole vault and notched a clearance of 4.10m (13-5.25 feet).
- The women's 110m hurdles saw Heddens turn in a finish of 14.15, while Wimbish clocked a personal best of 54.32 in the women's 400m. O'Hara dashed 10.62 in the men's 100 hurdles and Wallenstrom raced 2:13.09 in the women's 800m.
- Duke's relays notched a pair of top-three finishes as well, with the men's 4x100m (40.34) taking second via the fifth-fastest time in program lore, while the women's 4x400m (3:45.20) placed third.
