SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Sixth-ranked Notre Dame outscored Duke 6-0 in the second quarter to hand the 11th-ranked Blue Devils a 14-7 setback in ACC men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Arlotta Stadium.
Tied at two apiece after the first quarter, the Fighting Irish (5-2) went on a 6-0 run in the second period to open ACC play with a victory. A trio of Blue Devils –
Luke Grayum,
Andrew McAdorey and
Benn Johnston had two goals apiece. McAdorey also added an assist to finish with three points.
Duke (8-3) held Notre Dame to four even strength goals on 18 shots in the second half but couldn't find an answer to beat the Irish's stalwart defense.
How it Happened
- Duke got on board first with Luke Grayum ending his two-game scoring drought, dropping in a feed from Eric Malever for the 1-0 lead.
- Notre Dame registered the next two scores nearly six minutes apart before the Blue Devils evened the score with 1:51 remaining in the period. Duke's second marker came from the stick of Max Sloat with Malever notching his second assist.
- The second quarter was all Fighting Irish as they scored the lone six goals of the frame, taking an 8-2 lead at halftime. Five different players scored for Notre Dame in the 6-0 period while Duke fired just six shots in the period en route to being held scoreless in a stanza for just the fourth time this season.
- Andrew McAdorey ended Duke's scoring drought 4:14 into the third quarter – a scoreless stretch of 21:09 – to make it an 8-3 game. The Blue Devils and Irish traded goals with Benn Johnston getting into the scoring column, keeping Duke within five late in the period.
- The Blue Devils held Notre Dame to just seven shots and two goals in the third frame but were unable to find success on offense and headed into the fourth trailing 10-4. The Irish notched just one even strength goal in the quarter as Patrick Jameison made four saves to keep Duke within reach.
- McAdorey capitalized off a successful ride by the Blue Devils to pull Duke within five, 10-5, early in the fourth.
- Notre Dame rattled off four unanswered to break open the game, 14-5, midway through the period. Grayum notched his second of the afternoon, ending Duke's scoring drought at 13:53, and Johnston brought it to the 14-7 final with his 19th goal of the season.
- Jameison finished the afternoon with 11 saves while Luke Engelke went 8-of-18 at the faceoff dot. Keith Boyer led the defensive charge statistically with three caused turnovers and a ground ball. Duke forced the Irish into 12 turnovers while Notre Dame won the ground ball battle, 27-23.

- Duke moves to 8-3 overall this season and 0-1in ACC play. The Blue Devils are 3-2 against top 20 teams this season and 139-63 versus ranked foes since 2007.
- Andrew McAdorey scored two goals, marking his 11th straight game with at least one point. He has a point in 63 of his 66 career games and at least one goal in 52 of his 66 outings.
- Patrick Jameison registered 11 saves for his fifth double-digit saves performance of the season and the17th of his career.
