DURHAM, N.C. – Junior
KK Mathis crushed a grand slam over the center field wall in the bottom of the first to help guide No. 14 Duke past Elon, 10-0, at Duke Softball Stadium Tuesday night.
Mathis finished 2-for-3 at the plate, while matching her career-high with five RBI during the contest. Senior

Aminah Vega also went 2-for-3 on the night and accounted for four of Duke's 10 runs.
The junior duo of
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon and
Cassidy Curd combined to one-hit the Phoenix in the circle. Garner-MacKinnon surrendered the lone hit in the top of the first, before settling back in to work 3.0 scoreless innings with a game-high four strikeouts. Curd also fanned three during her 2.0 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gold opened the scoring right away, sending an RBI-double to the gap in left-center field to score Vega in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Amiah Burgess and graduate student Thessa Malau'ulu then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, before Mathis went yard to give Duke a 5-0 lead.
- The Blue Devils kept their foot on the gas in the following frame, adding four additional runs off RBI hits from Gold, Mathis, redshirt sophomore Kairi Rodriguez and junior D'Auna Jennings to stretch a 9-0 gap.
- Freshman Brooklinn Thomas knocked in Duke's 10th and final run in the bottom of the third using a double to left center to bring in junior Aleyah Terrell from first, who was pinch running for Rodriguez.
- Garner-MacKinnon and Curd combined to sit down the final six Elon batters to secure the shutout victory.
NOTES
- Mathis tallied her second career grand slam and first as a Blue Devil.
- Garner-MacKinnon earned the win in the circle and improved her season ledger to 4-1.
- After finishing 2-for-3 on the night, Vega tallied her 13th multi-hit performance of the season and extended her hitting streak to a team-best six games.
- The Blue Devils now lead the all-time series, 8-1, including a 6-0 record when playing at Duke Softball Stadium.
- Duke is 6-1 in run rule games this season, outscoring their opponents, 59-14.
UP NEXT
The Blue Devils open ACC play on the road this weekend as they travel to Clemson, S.C, to face the Tigers in a three-game conference series at McWhorter Stadium. Friday's opener is set for 6 p.m.
