SARASOTA, Fla. – The 16th-ranked Duke rowing team faced strong, nationally-ranked competition on the opening day of the Big Ten Invitational, held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
The Blue Devils went up against a stacked field of 23 teams, over half of which were ranked in the latest Pocock CRCA Top-25. In the field alongside Duke is No. 3 Washington, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 7 Brown, No. 9 Rutgers, No. 11 Penn, No. 12 Michigan, No. 14 Ohio State, No. 17 Oregon State, No. 18 Harvard, No. 20 Oklahoma, No. 21 Indiana, No. 24 USC, UCLA, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa, Alabama, Notre Dame, Miami, SMU, and Clemson.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke's Second Varsity Four kicked off the morning with a very tight race against No. 12 Michigan and No. 18 Harvard. It came down to a photo finish with all three boats finishing within one second of each other. The 2V4 was just narrowly edged by the first-place Wolverines, clocking a time of 7:15.127 to take second.
- The Varsity Four race followed immediately after with Duke earning a third-place finish with a time of 7:13.328.
- The Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight stayed competitive in the morning session, collecting a pair of fourth place finishes and registering times of 6:36.589 and 7:01.575, respectively.
- The Varsity Eight rounded out the morning with a fifth-place time of 6:35.403 in its first race of the day. The V8 improved their time by nearly two seconds in the afternoon session, crossing the finish line in 6:33.098.
- The 2V4 highlighted the afternoon racing with another second-place finish, beating out the crew from No. 7 Brown in the final stretch, to record a time of 7:19.433.
- Duke's V4 and 2V8 also went back-to-back with third-place performances, powering past crews from No. 14 Ohio State, Miami and Wisconsin in their second race of the day.
