CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Fourth-seeded and 10th-ranked Duke fell to fifth-seeded and 16th-ranked Clemson, 15-7, in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship Wednesday afternoon inside American Legion Memorial Stadium.
The Blue Devils had the game within reach with 10:39 remaining in the third period, 8-6, but Clemson went on a five-goal scoring run that stretched from the end of the third period and the beginning of the fourth period to push its lead and snap the Blue Devils' chance at a comeback.
How It Happened
- Sophomore Bella Goodwin slotted in the game's first goal at the 12:16 mark, giving Duke the 1-0 lead.
- Clemson responded with a three-goal run, stretching from the 8:47 mark to the 3:12 mark, to push out to a 3-1 lead.
- The Tigers pushed their lead to 7-1 early in the second quarter, going on a four-goal run, stretching from 11:11 to 6:29.
- Duke went on a two-goal run, as senior Carly Bernstein converted a free-position shot at the 5:15 mark. Redshirt sophomore Eva Pronti added a marker with 1:10 remaining in the first half off a Bernstein feed to cut Clemson's lead to 7-3.
- Clemson scored with 19 seconds remaining in the first half, sending the Tigers into the break leading, 8-3.
- In the first half, Clemson outshot Duke 12-7, the Tigers' held a 7-6 advantage in the draw circle and Clemson led 9-7 in ground balls.
- The momentum shifted in the Blue Devils' favor to start the second half as Duke opened with three unanswered goals, cutting the Tigers' lead to 8-6.
- Just under three minutes into the second period, Berstein slotted in her free-position shot, and graduate Callie Hem followed suit, netting a goal at the 11:58 mark.
- Hem scored her second goal of the game, rounding out the Blue Devils' run, at the 10:39 mark, as Goodwin forced a turnover, passed to senior Mattie Shearer, who fed Hem to make it a two-goal game.
- Clemson snapped the Blue Devils' scoring run, going on a three-goal surge over a span of 2:22 to push its lead, 11-6, with 6:36 remaining in the third period.
- The Tigers opened the fourth quarter by slotting in two goals within the first three minutes to extend their advantage to 13-6.
- Hem scored her third goal of the game with 10:33 remaining, decreasing Clemson's lead to 13-7.
- The Tigers scored two more goals to close out the game, rounding out their 15-7 triumph over Duke.
