How it Happened
- Duke jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 1:50, getting three goals from three different players in just 49 seconds.
- Andrew McAdorey opened scoring for the Blue Devils after a scrappy play off the ground forced Virginia into a turnover. Max Sloat caused the turnover and fed a wide open McAdorey on the crease for the 1-0 lead.
- Sophomore Tomas Delgado got the bench going for the Blue Devils with his first goal of the season on the ensuing possession. Luke Engelke ramped up the energy nine seconds later following another faceoff violation by the Cavaliers.
- Virginia responded with the next two markers to make it a 3-2 game, but Eric Malever ended Duke's scoring drought at the 5:06 mark to bring it back to a two-goal contest. The ACC rivals traded goals in the final two minutes, leaving the Blue Devils with a 5-3 edge after 15 minutes.
- With Duke leading 6-4 early in the second quarter, Graham Blake got in on the action with a roll dodge and score to extend the advantage back to three, 7-4. Virginia added an extra-man goal to make it 7-5 at the 8:42 mark. Neither team scored again as Duke went without a goal for the final 9:51 but still held a 7-5 lead at the break.
- Patrick Jameison, following his six saves in the first half, started the second half seeing the ball well with saves on consecutive Virginia possessions.
- However, Duke's offensive struggles continued throughout the third quarter and Virginia took advantage with three unanswered scores to take an 8-7 lead after 45 minutes of action.
- The Blue Devils fired just eight shots in the third stanza and turned the ball over three times while Virginia had nine and six, respectively.
- Duke's man-down defense came up with a huge stop to start the fourth quarter and forced a fourth shot clock violation on Virginia's second possession to stay within one. The defense left its mark on the offensive end as Keith Boyer tied the game at eight with 11:16 on the clock, ending Duke's scoring skid at 28:35.
- Truitt Sunderland responded for the Cavalier, putting Virginia back in front, 9-8, with 8:09 to play. Delgado struck again for the Blue Devils nearly four minutes later to make it a 9-9 contest with 4:30 to play.
- Jameison and Duke's defense continued to stand tall, forcing the Cavaliers into consecutive turnovers. The Blue Devils, gaining possession with 1:02 remaining, called a timeout to set up a final look.
