RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State defeated No. 21 Duke, 11-9, Saturday night at Dail Softball Stadium to even the weekend series.
The Wolfpack improves to 25-26 on the year and 6-17 in conference play while the Blue Devils dip to 36-15 overall and 15-8 in ACC action.
Graduate student
Dani Drogemuller earned her second start of the weekend and was tagged with the loss after surrendering eight runs off seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Junior
Cassidy Curd also saw action in the circle after entering the game in the bottom of the fourth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Aminah Vega sparked the Blue Devils' offense early, sending a two-run shot over the right center field wall in the opening frame to put Duke in front, 2-0.
- The Blue Devils kept their momentum going in the top of the second, using a walk, a pair of hits and two Wolfpack errors to tack on four runs and pull ahead, 6-0.
- NC State responded in the bottom half, adding three runs off four hits and an error to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
- Redshirt junior Jada Baker slipped an RBI-single into the right center field gap to score junior Aleyah Terrell and make it a 7-3 ballgame in the third inning. Terrell was pinch running for classmate KK Mathis after she reached on a base hit to left field.
- The Wolfpack stayed close by, adding another run in the bottom of the fourth using an RBI-double from Michele Tarpey to cut into Duke's edge, 7-4.
- Graduate student Thessa Malau'ulu pushed Duke ahead, 8-4, after coming home on a dropped third strike in the top of the fifth. Malau'ulu reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to third on a throwing error and a wild pitch.
- A solo home run from Hannah Church and a two-run shot off the bat of Tori Ensley made it a one-run game heading into the final two frames.
- NC State's Taryn Massey blasted a two-out grand slam to give the Wolfpack their first lead of the game, 11-8, in the bottom of the sixth.
- The Blue Devils fought until their final out, scoring one additional run in the top of the seventh but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 11-9 in the end.
NOTES
- Vega tallied her 10th home run of the season and second of the weekend series.
- The DeBary Fla., native homered in back-to-back games for the fifth time in her career.
- Curd made her 100th career appearance in the circle after entering the game in the bottom of the fourth.
- Gold, Mathis and junior D'Auna Jennings tallied their 13th, 15th and 18th multi-hit performances on the year, respectively.
- The setback marked Duke's first road loss to NC State and snapped the Blue Devils' 12-game winning streak against the Wolfpack.
