OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – No. 14 Duke rowing concluded racing at the inaugural Rocky Top Invitational Saturday afternoon on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The Blue Devils' Second Varsity Four boat earned a first-place finish in the second finals heat to highlight the day. The Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight placed second in their final races, while the Varsity Eight earned a third-place finish to round out the final day of racing.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first race of the day, Duke's Varsity Eight crew clocked a time of 6:43.635 to take home third place in the first finals heat, finishing behind the top boats from No. 5 Tennessee and No. 17 UCF.
- The Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four followed with a pair of strong performances in the finals, staying competitive with the fifth-ranked Volunteers. Both boats improved their times on the second day, crossing the finish line in 6:39.509 and 7:28.994, respectively.
- The Blue Devils' Second Varsity Four crew made up of coxswain Ava Liebmann, Avery Packard, Thea Lapham, Vivian Teeley and Jane Atkeson powered their way to a first-place time of 7:40.767, finishing ahead of the crews from Minnesota and Clemson.
- The Third Varsity Eight closed out the day with another second-place finish in their final race. The 3V8 recorded a time of 7:04.556, coming in behind Tennessee in first and just three seconds ahead of North Carolina.
