Alaina McVeigh and
Macy Szukics have been selected to the U.S. U-21 Women's National Team that will head to Asunción, Paraguay for the 2024 Junior Pan American Games.
The Junior Pan American Games will take place August 9-23 at The Olympic Park. This is the first edition of the event where the sport of field hockey will be included.
Beach, McVeigh and Szukics were selected following a series of training camps held in Charlotte, North Carolina this past spring. The team will hold one more camp, June 21-29, in preparation for the event.
Beach is coming off a solid rookie season in which she played 18 games in the midfield. She helped provide depth to a talented midfield corps for the Blue Devils and will be looked to fill holes left by graduation in 2025.
A two-time NFHCA All-American and the 2023 ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, McVeigh has spearheaded Duke's offense the past two seasons with 30 goals and five assists for 65 points in 43 contests. She is the first Blue Devil to earn All-America honors in consecutive seasons since Margaux Paolino did so in 2018 and 2019 and ranks 20th and 26th at Duke in goals and points, respectively.
A junior, Szukics has been a steady force for the Blue Devils' midfield since she stepped on campus. She has started 46 of her 61 career games and has four goals and 14 assists for 22 points. In addition to her play in the midfield, the Malvern, Pennsylvania native is a threat on offensive penalty corners both on the insert and the sweep.
The Junior Pan American Games are a multi-sport event held every four years among youth athletes from all over the American continent. The Games have been organized by PanAm Sports. This event, inspired by the Youth Olympic Games, is exclusively for athletes under 21 years of age, with fewer infrastructure requirements and costs than the Pan American Games.
The Pan American Games started in 1951 and spawned the Junior Pan American Games, aimed at promoting young athletes. The first edition was held in 2021 in Cali, Colombia, marking an important milestone for the sport in the continent.
The squad will have a training camp August 5 to 7 in Charlotte, N.C. and will depart for Paraguay on August 7. Once on ground they will have training August 8, 9 and 10. Games will take place August 11 to 19.
