DURHAM, N.C.—Duke senior
Alaina McVeigh scored in the 55th minute to lift the fifth-ranked Blue Devils to a thrilling 2-1 victory over No. 4 Maryland in the finale of the ACC/B1G Challenge Sunday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Julia Boehringer opened the scoring for the Blue Devils with a fabulous drag flick in the ninth minute. Maryland tied the game early in the fourth quarter before McVeigh answered to give Duke its first top 20 win of the season. The Blue Devils improve to 2-2 overall, while Maryland falls to 2-2.
How it Happened
- Duke started the game off strong, pushing the pace and controlling possession in the early minutes. The Blue Devils earned the first penalty corner of the game in the ninth minute – one of only two for Duke on the afternoon. McVeigh provided the insert to sophomore Madison Beach on the stick stop, and just like Duke had drawn it up, Boehringer lifted the shot high into the right corner for the 1-0 lead.
- Defensively, the Blue Devils were outstanding in limiting the Terrapins' possession in the first quarter and not allowing a shot in the opening 15 minutes.
- Maryland had the better of play offensively for much of the second quarter, but the Blue Devils remained steady through the midfield and in their defensive third to hold the Terps to just one shot and no penalty corners.
- Coming out of the locker room with a 1-0 lead, Duke stayed the course and continued to frustrate Maryland's offense. Blue Devil goalie Kaiya Chepow came up with a huge stick save midway through the third quarter, extending her stick to knock away the hit from Djuna Eikelboom and keep the 1-0 lead.
- In the fourth quarter, Maryland found some success inside the penalty circle, earning its first penalty corner two minutes into the frame. Duke defended the first set piece successfully before a stellar shot by Jordyn Hollamon on the second penalty corner hit the back of the cage to tie the game at one in the 49th minute.
- The Blue Devils regained their composure and six minutes later capitalized on their second corner of the afternoon. This time it was McVeigh getting her stick down perfectly for the redirect off a Macy Szukics sweep.
- Chepow made a career-best three saves in the win, including one in the fourth quarter to keep the game tied. Maryland keeper Alyssa Klebasko did not make a save in 55 minutes of action.
- Maryland outshot Duke 7-3 for the game and had five penalty corners to the Blue Devils' two.
Notes
- Duke improves to 12-8 all-time in the ACC/B1G Challenge and captures its fourth straight win over the Terrapins.
- The top five win is the 18th under head coach Pam Bustin and puts Duke at 18-45 versus top five teams since 2011.
- Alaina McVeigh's fourth-quarter goal was the first in the second half for Duke this season.
- McVeigh's second goal of the season gives her 32 for her career, tying her for 17th in Duke history. She moves to tie for 22nd in program lore with 69 points. She is now five goals shy of moving into a tie for the top 15 in goals at Duke and six points away from becoming the 19th player in a Blue Devil uniform to record 75 career points.
- Kaiya Chepow recorded a career-high three saves in her second career win.
