ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay βΒ The Duke field hockey trio of
Madison Beach,
Alaina McVeigh and
Macy Szukics earned the silver medal with the U.S. U21 Women's National Team Tuesday night, falling to world No. 2 Argentina, 3-0in the final of the Junior Pan American Games.
Representing the U21 United States National Team, Beach, McVeigh and Szukics started every game for the red, white and blue. McVeigh was the offensive star with 11 goals in the tournament while Beach and Szukics were stalwarts in the midfield.
In the gold medal game, Argentina controlled the action, outshooting the U.S., 19-1. The talented South American squad allowed the United States just three circle entries in the 60 minutes and controlled 63 percent of the possession.
The United States cruised through pool play, besting Mexico (8-0), Chile (4-0) and Guyana (11-0). McVeigh had nine goals across the three games. In the semifinals, the U.S. defeated Uruguay, 2-1 with the Duke forward scoring both goals.
The trio returns to Durham as the Blue Devils prepare for the 2025 season. Duke caps its exhibition slate at Wake Forest, Aug. 23. The campaign officially gets underway Aug. 29 against Liberty. The first hit is set for 4 p.m.
