KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The United Soccer Coaches (USC) and Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) announced the 2025 Hermann Trophy Watch List, ahead of the regular season beginning on Thursday, with Duke forward
Ulfur Bjornsson earning a spot on the list.Â
The Hermann Trophy is presented annually by the MAC and is the nation's highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by voting of Division I head coaches who are USC members. It is named in honor of the late Robert Hermann, the legendary St. Louis, Mo., businessman and soccer executive who founded the National Professional Soccer League, the first pro soccer league in the United States which became the North American Soccer League. He was inducted in the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012.
Bjornsson is one of just two players on the 2025 watch list that were also 2024 Hermann Trophy semifinalists, joined by Pittsburgh senior defender Casper Svendby. Nine total Blue Devils have won either the MAC Player of the Year or Hermann Trophy, which merged in 2002, including
Joseph Ulrich (1982),Â
Michael Jeffries (1983),Â
Tom Kain (1985),
John Kerr (1986),
Jay Heaps (1998),Â
Ali Curtis (1999, 2000), andÂ
Andrew Wenger (2011).Â
Bjornsson is coming off a 2024 campaign where he registered 18 starts in Duke's 19 matches and led the Blue Devils in total points (29), courtesy of 13 goals and three assists. Alongside being named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the native of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, was also named Second Team All-America, First Team All-ACC and First Team All-South Region. With 23 goals, seven assists and 53 total points through two seasons, Bjornsson is the preseason No. 1 player in TopDrawerSoccer's Top 100 players, a Preseason First Team Best XI selection by TopDrawerSoccer, a USC Forward to Watch and an ACC Preseason Player to Watch.
