DURHAM, N.C. – Duke volleyball closed out its weekend with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 28-26) sweep over Clemson on Sunday afternoon inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke (10-4, 2-2 ACC) led in nearly every offensive category, as it got big games from its outside and middle hitters. The Blue Devils also held the Clemson (6-10, 0-4 ACC) offense in check, as it hit .143.
The sweep is Duke's second consecutive 3-0 win over Clemson, and its fifth in the last six meetings.
Nataly Moravec led the offensive attack for the Blue Devils, posting a game-high 15 kills on .297 hitting, while
Ashby Zubchevich recorded 13 kills on the other pin. Both of Duke's outside hitters have recorded double-digit kills in each of the last 11 matches. In the middle, Zoë Gillen-Malveaux was incredibly effective on the slide, tallying 11 kills on .444 hitting. Duke finished the afternoon hitting .277, as
Nikki Quinn had a match-high 42 assists from the setter spot.
Defense also played a major role in the victory, as Duke led the block battle 6-4.
Breonna Goss and Gillen-Malveaux each had three kills to lead all players.
Mailinh Godschall was the only play on other side to reach double-digit digs, recording a match-best 15.
How it Happened
Set 1: Duke 25, Clemson 21
- It was a back-and-forth affair early in the match, as the two teams traded points. The Blue Devils were ahead 15-13 at the media timeout following a kill by Zubchevich.
- Things evened up at 19-19 before Duke closed out the frame on a 6-2 run. A kill by Moravec gave the Blue Devils an early 1-0 advantage.
- The graduate outside hitter led Duke with six kills on 11 attempts and no errors, as the team hit .294. Defense is where Duke shined, holding Clemson to .083 hitting.
Set 2: Duke 25, Clemson 21
- Like the first set, it was another close frame through the opening 22 points, as the score was even at 11. However, Duke built up momentum by going into the media timeout on a 4-0 run, which included a pair of kills from Zubchevich and a block from her and Goss.
- Clemson was able to counter the Duke run later in the set, as it went on a 3-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. The Blue Devils answered by winning six of the next seven points to take a 2-0 match advantage.
- During the 6-1 run, Gillen-Malveaux and Zubchevich each had a pair of kills, while Moravec added an ace. Clemson committed a service error to end the set.
- It was the best defensive set for Duke, as Clemson hit .000. The Blue Devils surrendered just five kills. Gillen-Malveaux and Zubchevich each had five kills for the Blue Devils.
Set 3: Duke 28, Clemson 26
- Duke had a strong open to the final set, jumping ahead 8-4 which forced a Clemson timeout. The Tigers were able to get back into, but the Blue Devils still led by three – 15-12 – at the media timeout.
- Trailing 20-17, Clemson went on a 3-0 run to even things up at 20 apiece. The two teams went back and forth, and the Tigers had two attempts at a match point but were unsuccessful. On Duke's second attempt at clinching the victory, Gillen-Malveaux and Zubchevich combined for the block to finish things off.
- The Blue Devils hit .359 in the frame and got seven kills from Moravec to lead the way.
By the Numbers
- Duke won the kill battle 48-29, while also dishing out 46 assists compared to Clemson's 28.
- The Tigers held the edge in digs, 55-54. Duke led in blocks 6-4.
- Both teams struggled from the service line, combining for 28 errors. Duke had 17, while Clemson had 10.
- There were 32 score ties and 13 lead changes.
- The attendance was 1,008, which is a season-high for Duke.
