DURHAM, N.C. - A pair of home runs, courtesy of
Cider Canon, pushed Duke past Princeton, 6-2, at Jack Coombs Field on Friday, Feb. 27. On the mound, the Blue Devils (9-2) received seven innings from
Aidan Weaver, who earned his third win of the season in as many starts.
Canon now has a team-leading four homers and 17 RBI through 11 games this season. The junior boasts a 1.337 OPS and is hitting .417 through 36 at-bats. Weaver scattered five hits across his seven innings of work, while striking out nine and allowing just one walk. The senior has allowed just two runs in each of his three starts so far this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Aidan Weaver started the game with a strikeout, before allowing a single to Princeton's second batter of the contest, Tommy Googins. Cider Canon threw out Googins on an attempted steal, helping Duke head to the bottom of the first with the score still 0-0.Â
- Neither team could muster a hit in the second inning and after Weaver retired the side in the top of the third, RJ Hamilton started the offense in the bottom half with a walk. The second baseman reached third after a balk and a wild pitch, before Canon sent a 3-2 pitch 408 feet down the left-field line for Duke's first hit of the afternoon.
- Princeton managed two consecutive singles in the top of the fourth, but Jake Lambdin ended the inning with a diving stop of a grounder and subsequent double play.
- Canon sent his second homer of the contest to left center in the bottom of the fifth, another two-run blast, after Lambdin reached earlier in the frame with a double.Â
- Weaver surrendered the only two runs of his outing with a two-run home run that snuck over the left-field fence in the top of the seventh, but the senior bounced back with a strikeout to end his outing.
- The Blue Devils added a pair of one-out runs in the bottom of the seventh, with Hamilton driving in a run with a fielder's choice and Tyler Albright logging a sacrifice fly.
- Marcello Mastroianni entered in the eighth and secured the game's final six outs to secure Duke's 6-2 victory.
