ORLANDO, FLORIDA – No. 23 Duke swept both its games on day two of the UCF Invitational. The Blue Devils defeated Buffalo, 3-1, in the first game before rolling past CSU Bakersfield, 13-4, in five innings to close out the day.
Senior
D'Auna Jennings powered the offense, batting 4-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored. Freshman
Jayla Stafford and graduate student
Tyrina Jones also played major roles on offense, hitting 5-for-6 and 3-for-7, respectively. The duo also combined to drive in six of Duke's 16 runs on the night. Â
Sophomore
Mallory Wheeler and redshirt freshman
Ava Bradshaw made their Blue Devil debuts in the circle. Wheeler tossed a complete game against the Bulls, allowing just one run off six hits while striking out five. Bradshaw had her no-hit bid broken up in the bottom of the fourth inning against the Roadrunners, surrendering four runs off five hits with a pair of strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. BUFFALO
- After a scoreless first two frames, the Blue Devils sparked their offense in the bottom of the third. Jennings led off with an infield single before classmate Aminah Vega scored her from first with an RBI-double to the left center field wall. Jones brought Vega in with a base hit two batters later to extend the lead, 2-0.
- Sophomore Layla Lamar pushed the Blue Devils ahead again, sending a two-out triple to left center field to score Jones and create a 3-0 gap.
- The Bulls responded in the top of the sixth with an RBI-double down the right field line to plate their lone run.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. CSU BAKERSFIELD
- Duke came out firing in the second game of the day, posting five runs in the first inning. Jones opened the scoring with a three-run long ball before graduate student Jada Baker ripped a triple to the center field wall to make it a 5-0 game.
- The Blue Devils kept their momentum going over the following three innings, adding five additional runs to stretch a 10-0 advantage.
- CSU Bakersfield answered in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of home runs to cut into the lead, 10-3.
- Duke pushed ahead once again in the top of the fifth, tacking on three more runs off three hits, highlighted by a two-RBI single off the bat of freshman Gabriella Shadek.
- The Roadrunners added one final run in the home half before the Blue Devils could grab the third out.
NOTES
- Freshmen Adelyn Matthews saw action in the field for the first time versus Buffalo, entering to play centerfield in the top of the fourth inning.
- Matthews and Stafford tallied their first career hits against the Bulls. Stafford finished 2-for-3 during the contest while Matthews hit 1-for-2.
- Lamar recorded the first triple of her collegiate career in the bottom of the third of the opening game.
- Baker tallied her third career triple during the nightcap against CSU Bakersfield.
- Junior Dakota Farmer made her season debut behind the plate, entering in the top of the fourth versus the Roadrunners.
