DURHAM, N.C.— Duke junior goaltender
Patrick Jameison made six second-half saves and the fifth-ranked Blue Devils held No. 18 Saint Joseph's to one goal in the final 30 minutes to earn a 12-6 win in non-conference men's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon.
Jameison finished his day with 11 saves, posting a .647 save percentage to push the Blue Devils to 5-0 on the season.
Benn Johnston and
Brady Scioletti both registered three goals with Scioletti finishing with a game-high five points.
Saint Joseph's (2-1) went without a goal for 30:48, spanning from 2:38 left in the second quarter until the 1:50 mark of the fourth quarter. Duke scored five in that span to pull away from the Hawks for the 12-6 victory.
How it Happened
- Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Duke's offense got off to a slow start in the game. The Blue Devils fired 10 shots in the opening quarter but only put four on the cage.
- Kyle Colsey got Duke on the board with 1:42 left in the opening stanza, finishing a feed Scioletti to make it 2-1 game after 15 minutes.
- The Hawks went back in front by two early in the second quarter before the Blue Devils went on a 5-1 run to head into the halftime break with a 6-4 lead.
- Johnston rifled a shot past the Saint Joseph's goaltender to spark the run that included goals from five different players. After trading goals with the Hawks, Duke got scorers from Scioletti and Maguire to gain their first lead of the day. Nikolas Menendez picked up his first assist of the year with the ground ball and pass for Maguire's transition score. Liam Kershis capped the run at 3:04 before Saint Joseph's got on the board with 2:38 remaining.
- Duke's offense found its rhythm in the final seven minutes of the third, while the Blue Devils locked down on defense throughout the quarter, holding the Hawks to five shots in the period despite winning three of the four faceoffs.
- Scioletti scored twice to stretch the lead to 8-5 and Johnston added a third in the final minute to put Duke up, 9-5, with 15 minutes remaining.
- Kershis and Jack Pappendick rounded out the scoring for Duke in the fourth. Saint Joseph's had nine shots in the final stanza as Jameison tacked on four more saves to his total.
- Henry Bard helped anchor the defensive effort with three caused turnovers, while Cal Girard was excellent at the faceoff dot at 13-of-20 with 10 ground balls.
- Ben Dutton led the Hawks with two goals, while Carter Truesdell had a goal and two assists.
Notes
- Benn Johnston registered his third consecutive hat trick and the fourth this season. He has 20 goals and two assists for 22 points, just 13 fewer than he had in 18 games last season.
- Brady Scioletti notched a career-high five points, including his second career hat trick.
- Kyle Colsey had two goals, giving him multiple points in each of his five collegiate games.
- Patrick Jameison's 11 saves marked his second double-digit save performance of the season and the 26th of his career.
- Cal Girard picked up 10 ground balls for his third game with at least five GBs and eighth of his career. The 13 faceoff victories mark the fifth time in his career he's had at least 10.
- Duke improves to 143-66 (.682) versus USILA top-20 opponents under head coach John Danowski.
