TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Both offenses exploded in a Saturday conference clash, but Duke's efforts fell just short in a 12-11 loss at No. 10 Florida State. The Blue Devils (17-12, 4-7 ACC) rallied from multi-run deficits multiple times, including four runs in the top of the eighth to knot the score at 11-11, but the Seminoles (21-5, 7-1 ACC) scratched across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to claim the weekend series.
Michael DiMartini blasted his third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, while
RJ Hamilton,
Matthew Strand and
Brooks Perez all logged multi-RBI performances as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke got on the board in the opening half inning, with a sacrifice fly from Matthew Strand bringing RJ Hamilton home. The hosts responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, before the Blue Devils rallied with three more runs in the top of the second to tie the score, 4-4. Tyler Albright started the early rally with an RBI double and Hamilton slashed a two-run single.
- After the Seminoles went back in front, 5-4, in the bottom of the second, the Blue Devils regained the lead in the fourth inning. Michael DiMartini turned around a 1-0 pitch, clearing the fence in left field for a two-run homer. Brooks Perez extended Duke's lead, 7-5, with an RBI single in the top of the sixth, scoring DiMartini from second after a double.
- Florida State posted three runs in each of its next two trips to the plate, moving back in front, 11-7, entering the penultimate inning. The Blue Devils once again rallied with four runs in the top half of the eighth. Collin Anderson started the scoring with an RBI double, bringing around Jake Lambdin, who had started the inning with a leadoff single.
- Anderson eventually came home on a wild pitch and Perez drove in Coltin Quagliano with an opposite-field single. After a walk and an infield single loaded the bases, Strand worked a five-pitch walk to force home the game-tying run.
- The Seminoles took the lead for good in the home half of the eighth, with an unearned run following a throwing error.Â
