DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke baseball team threatened in each of the last three innings but could not capitalize in dropping the series finale to Notre Dame, 2-0, at Jack Coombs Field on Sunday, March 8. The Blue Devils (13-5, 1-2 ACC) received strong pitching from
Andy Leon and
Jack Hedrick and made several key defensive plays behind the duo, but could not even the score with the Fighting Irish (9-4, 2-1 ACC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both pitchers threw a perfect two innings to open the contest, before Jamie Zee singled in the top of the third for Notre Dame and Coltin Quagliano singled in the bottom half for the Blue Devils.
- Leon settled back in during the top of the fourth, retiring Notre Dame in order. He added another scoreless frame in the fifth after stranding a pair of two-out base runners.
- The visitors opened the scoring with a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth and Jack Hedrick replaced Leon after the Fighting Irish followed with a single and a hit by pitch. Hedrick escaped the jam with a flyout on his first pitch and a double-play ball on his second pitch of the day.
- An RBI single in the top of the seventh doubled Notre Dame's lead.
- The Blue Devils loaded the bases in the home half of the seventh and eighth innings, but went to the bottom of the ninth still trailing by two. After two outs to start the ninth, back-to-back singles and a double steal put Duke in a threatening position, but the threat was extinguished.
