WASHINGTON D.C. – Duke men's lacrosse senior
Aidan Maguire and junior
Benn Johnston are two of the 25 nominees for the 2026 Tewaaraton Award presented by Stifel the Tewaaraton Foundation announced Saturday afternoon. The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the preeminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.
Five men's finalists will be selected from this group, to be announced May 7 at the conclusion of the regular season. They will be honored May 28 at the 2026 Tewaaraton Award Ceremony presented by Stifel at the Andrew W Mellon Auditorium, in Washington D.C.
This is the first time both Maguire and Johnston have been nominees. Maguire is the lone short stick defensive midfielder on the list and one of only six defensive players, including a pair of goaltenders. Duke is one of seven programs to have multiple players represented as Princeton and North Carolina lead the way with three apiece.
The No. 1 pick in the Premier Lacrosse League Draft, Maguire is a generational defensive midfielder for the Blue Devils. Maguire has left an indelible mark on the Duke program and the Blue Devil record book. He recently was one of two players to be a unanimous first-team choice to the Inside Lacrosse Mid-Season All-America team earlier this season.
The Hingham, Massachusetts native has led Duke's rope unit throughout his time in Durham, earning consensus All-America first team recognition last season. The 2025 Lt. Donald MacLaughlin National Midfielder of the Year and ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Maguire is a true two-way player as one of the top takeaway artists in lacrosse and an incredible threat in transition.
Last season, Maguire recorded 26 caused turnovers to tie for fifth among SSDM's in NCAA single-season history and seventh overall in Blue Devil lore. He also picked up 57 ground balls and added six goals and four assists.
Maguire has added 13 caused turnovers to his career total this season, helping anchor the nation's sixth-ranked scoring defense. He has at least one caused turnover in nine games this season and in all but nine of his past 30 outings.
Johnston paces the Duke offense with 34 goals as he moved down to attack from the midfield. He has registered multiple points in all 12 games this season a hat trick in seven contests. The Lake Forest, Illinois native tallied a career-high six goals and seven points in a win over Vermont and notched three goals against Syracuse. In three ACC games this year, the three-year starter has six goals and two assists for eight points.
Johnston has started 45 of his 49 career games and has 83 goals and 23 assists for 106 points. He is also outstanding off the ground with 64 ground balls. His 29 loose balls this season are third overall on the team and the most by a non-faceoff specialist.
Duke (8-4) closes out the regular season at No. 3 North Carolina April 25. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m., at Dorrance Field on ESPNU.
