CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Duke senior
Charlie Johnson was named the ACC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week following his stellar performance against No. 3 North Carolina last Saturday.
This is Johnson's first conference player of the week honor this season as he helped lead the Blue Devils to a commanding 16-12 victory against the Tar Heels with two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.
Matched up against North Carolina's top attackman Owen Duffy, Johnson held the speedy attackman to just two goals and an assist over the 60 minutes. Both goals came in the final two minutes of the game after Duke had built a 14-6 lead.
While Johnson's defensive effort was notable, the Riverside, Connecticut native made waves for his offensive production with his first career goal to help the Blue Devils to an 11-3 halftime lead. With North Carolina setting up a 10-man ride against Duke's clear, Johnson saw the empty net and let his shot fly from 60 yards away for the tally.
A starter in all 13 games on defense, Johnson leads the team with 17 caused turnovers. He ranks fourth in the ACC in takeaways while anchoring one of the nation's best defensive units. He has 50 career caused turnovers to rank 11th in Duke history.
The Blue Devils finished the regular season with a 9-4 overall record. Duke has a top-five victory over North Carolina, while its four losses came against current top-10 teams in the USILA rankings. All four setbacks came by a total of eight goals.
