DURHAM, N.C.—Duke senior
Aidan Maguire headlined the Blue Devils five selections to the 2026 Nike Lacrosse Media Mid-Season All-America teams announced by Inside Lacrosse Friday morning. Maguire was one of two unanimous first-team picks as Duke landed three on the top three teams and a pair of honorable mentions.
Maguire and North Carolina faceoff specialist Brady Wambach were the only two unanimous first-team choices by the media contingency. Garnering second-team recognition for Duke was
Charlie Johnson as a close defenseman. Senior midfielder
Max Sloat represented the Blue Devils on the third team, and
Benn Johnston (A) and
Cal Girard (FO) picked up honorable mention nods.
Maguire and Johnson anchor Duke's stalwart defense that holds teams to 7.90 goals and just 31 shots per game. The reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Maguire is the leader on Duke's rope unit and has 10 caused turnovers and an impressive 22 ground balls this season. He also is a threat in transition for the Blue Devils, adding three goals and five assists to lead all defensive players.
Johnson, Duke's top close defenseman, leads all Blue Devils with 13 caused turnovers and has picked up 18 ground balls. After having the second-best single-season total for takeaways last season, Johnson is climbing his way up the career charts with 46 caused turnovers to rank 11th in Duke history.
Sloat is having his best season as a full-time midfielder, ranking second on the team in goals (23) and third in points (26). He has four hat tricks this season which match his total in his previous 41 games combined. His 23 goals are three shy of his total in 18 games a year ago.
Making the move down to attack, Johnston leads the ACC with 3.33 goals per game. With 30 goals on the season, the native of Lake Forest, Illinois, has already surpassed his total from last season and is one point shy of notching his 100th career point. He also is outstanding off the ground for the Blue Devils, leading all offensive players with 24 ground balls.
Girard has emerged this season as Duke's faceoff leader with a 62-percent success rate at the dot. After taking just 90 faceoffs last season, Girard has lined up for 162 restarts and won 101 of them. He has 70 ground balls and has committed just six turnovers for the season. Girard has won at least 50 percent of his faceoffs in all nine games and picked up at least five ground balls in each outing.
Seventh-ranked Duke (8-1) hosts No. 16 Virginia (6-4) Saturday at noon at Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
