Navarro Navarro Guides C. Valenciana to Spanish Championship

VILA-SECA, Spain – The Duke women's golf Spanish duo of Martina Navarro Navarro and Anna Cañado Espinal turned in impressive weeks at the Spanish FFAA Women's Championship contested at Infinitum Golf – Lakes in Vila-seca.
In the end, Navarro Navarro helped lead her C. Valenciana squad to a 6-5-2.5 victory over Cañado Espinal's Catalonia team to claim the championship.
The action started with 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying. Cañado Espinal carded rounds of 72 and 66 for a 4-under, 138, to finish tied for first, while Navarro Navarro placed fourth with scores of 70 and 69 for a 3-under, 139. C. Valenciana earned the No. 1 seed heading into match play and Catalonia was the No. 2 seed.
C. Valenciana totaled a 3-2 win against La Rioja in the quarterfinals as Navarro Navarro collected a 5-and-3 win over Paula Valls Alesanco. Navarro Navarro then posted a 4-and-3 win against White Yrizar Tejada in the semifinals as C. Valenciana defeated Basque Country, 3.5-1.5.
Catalonia opened match play with a 5-0 win against Aragon as Cañado Espinal registered a 6-and-5 win against Elena Carillo Odriozola. In the semifinals, Catalonia notched a 3-2 victory over Andalusia with Cañado Espinal totaling a 2-up win versus Maria Purroy Galan.
Navarro Navarro and Cañado Espinal met in the championship Thursday.
In the morning, the two teams had foursomes matches with Navarro Navarro teaming with Balma Davalos Guaita for a 4-and-2 victory against Marina Joyce Moreno and Daniela Montolio Reyes. Cañado Espinal played with Alexandra Vidal Rivera and defeated Lucia Valderrama Martinez and Clara Sworn Use, 2-and-1.
C. Valenciana led 2-1 after the foursomes with six individual matches slated for the afternoon to decide the championship.
The future Duke teammates were paired against each other in an individual match. Cañado Espinal took the first lead of the match on No. 3, but Navarro Navarro won the next hole to tie the match. Navarro Navarro took a 1-up lead through the fifth hole, but Cañado Espinal evened the score by winning No. 7. Cañado Espinal regained the lead on No. 9 and increased her lead to 3-up through 12. Navarro Navarro didn't stop battling though as she won holes Nos. 14 and 15 to cut the deficit to one hole, but couldn't even the match with Cañado Espinal winning, 1-up.
For match play, Cañado Espinal posted a 4-0 record with Navarro Navarro finishing 3-1.
