Tyler Hanson, formerly the assistant coach at
Bates College, joined the Duke baseball staff as a volunteer assistant coach in March, 2011.
Hanson, a
2009 graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington, takes over for
volunteer assistant coach Ryan McCurdy, who held the position until the
end of February before reporting to the Houston Astros spring training
camp.
A former four-year starter behind the plate who earned a
degree in Business Economics, Hanson will work directly with Duke’s
catchers while also running the bunting program and overseeing the Duke
Baseball Academy camps. Additionally, he will assist with the daily
routines for hitters and infielders.
“We are excited to welcome
Tyler Hanson to our baseball coaching staff,” McNally said. “He is a
diligent worker and a good communicator who will impact our players in a
positive fashion immediately.  We look forward to the growth and
development of our summer camps under his direction as well.”
Hanson
previously served as an assistant coach at Division-III Bates College
from 2009-11, coaching one of those years alongside current Duke
assistant coach Edwin Thompson, who was the program’s head coach in 2009
and 2010. Hanson helped Thompson lead the program to a school-record 25
wins in 2010 and the 19th-best batting average in the Division-III
baseball. During his tenure, Hanson mentored an all-conference catcher
and helped the program lead the NESCAC in home runs, stolen bases and
fielding percentage in 2010.
Hanson was a two-time North Atlantic
All-Conference selection at the University of Maine at Farmington and
ranks among the top 10 in school history in home runs. He captained the
team as a junior and senior, led the squad to two conference playoff
berths and hit a combined .346 as a sophomore and junior when he earned
all-conference recognition. Hanson also received the team’s Golden Glove
Award in 2007 when he posted a .993 fielding percentage.
A
native of Sanford, Maine, Hanson also enjoyed a stint with the Sanford
Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of
2010 where he served as hitting coach and helped the team finish with a
23-19 record. He was also involved with the Bates College football
program as an assistant coach charged with instructing wide receivers
and assisting with special teams.
Hanson joins a Duke baseball
program that is on a run of four consecutive winning seasons and has
started 2011 with a 7-2 record.
