Josh Goffi is in his second season as an assistant coach at Duke. He was named an assistant in June, 2008.
Goffi was instrumental in bringing in the No. 6 player in the country, Henrique Cunha, in his first recruiting class while at Duke. Goffi’s ties to Brazil helped real in the prized recruit, instantly boosting the Blue Devils’ lineup.
In his first season at Duke, Goffi helped the Blue Devils recover from its first losing season since 1970, as Duke finished the 2008-09 season with a 16-9 overall record and 7-4 mark in the ACC. The Blue Devils finished the year ranked No. 23 nationally and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Senior Kiril Dimitrov was named to the All-ACC team.
Goffi came to Duke after serving as an assistant women’s tennis coach at Arizona State for two seasons. In two years with the Sun Devils he helped lead the team to a 28-18 overall record and back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament second round.
In 2007-08 he was named the Wilson/ITA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year after guiding ASU to a 15-8 overall record and 4-4 mark in the PAC-10 Conference. The Sun Devils finished the season ranked No. 23 in the ITA team rankings and had two players garner PAC-10 All-Conference honors. In his first season, Goffi helped lead four Arizona State players to the PAC-10 All-Conference team while earning a 13-10 record and No. 24 national ranking. While at ASU, Goffi helped lead the Sun Devils to its first victory over Stanford in 24 years. ASU also defeated 2008 NCAA Champion and 2007 NCAA finalist UCLA in both seasons Goffi was on the coaching staff.
The 2006-07 season saw Arizona State compile a 13-10 overall record. The Sun Devils were ranked No. 18 in the final ITA team rankings with two ranked singles players and one ranked doubles team. Two players earned PAC-10 All-Conference second team honors and one was named to the PAC-10 All-Academic team.
Prior to coaching, Goffi competed professionally on the ATP Tour from 2001-2005. He won three singles titles and 18 doubles championships while collecting six victories over top-100 players and three doubles wins over top-10 duos. He represented his native country Brazil in the 2004 Davis Cup and was ranked as high as No. 121 in doubles and No. 480 in singles.
Goffi, a Charleston, S.C. native, graduated from Clemson University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in financial management. In his four-year career with the Tigers, he was a three-time All-ACC first team selection in 1999, 2000 and 2001, making him one of nine players in Clemson history to earn three All-ACC honors. He played at the No. 1 position in singles and doubles for three years and was ranked as high as No. 9 in singles and No. 2 in doubles during his collegiate career. In four seasons, he posted a singles record of 84-64, leading the Tigers in singles wins in 1999 with a 31-19 record. He also led the squad in doubles victories in 1999 with a 27-13 mark, moving on to tally an 85-50 career doubles record. He was also the flight #3 singles champion in the ACC in 1999 and a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll choice. He competed in the NCAA Individual National Championships in both doubles (1999) and singles (2000).
Born January 24, 1979, Goffi is married to the former Nancy Augustyniak, who was a soccer standout for Clemson and in the WUSA. The couple currently resides in Durham. His father, Carlos, was named the World Coach of the Year in 1991 while coaching several ATP touring professionals.
