DURHAM, N.C. - Senior Kim Daws (Northridge, Calif.) scored the game-winnning
goal in the 101st minute off a free kick as the 23rd-ranked Duke Blue Devils
defeated the Charlotte 49ers 2-1 on Wednesday night at Koskinen Stadium. The
win improves Duke to 12-5 while Charlotte drops to 10-8-1.After both teams played a scoreless first half, Duke got on the board in the 51st minute when senior Alexis Highsmith (Hamden, Conn.) beat Charlotte goalkeeper Andrea Kollmorgen from 25 yards out to put the Blue Devils up 1-0. The play was assisted by senior Susan Kraeger (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman Kelly Harris (Dallas, Texas).
Charlotte tied the score at 1-1 at 78:56 when senior Meredith Mayo collected a cross from junior Jessica Mays and beat Duke goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) with a far post shot.
The game remained tied until 101:40 when Daws scored the game-winner for the Blue Devils.
Duke will return to action on Sat. Oct. 28 when the Blue Devils conclude their 2000 home slate as they host Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
