Duke women's basketball team opened its season by crushing Athletes in Action 111-73 behind the play of its freshmen in an exhibition game at Durham.
Led by Alana Beard and Iciss Tillis, the Blue Devils' freshman class scored 65 points and hit 61 percent of its shots from field (25-for-41).
The other three members of the recruiting class all played extremely well - Rometra Craig (11 points), Vicki Krapohl (five points), and Crystal White (three points).
Beard finished with a game-high 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists and six steals. Tillis had 18 points, six rebounds and four steals.
The Blue Devils jumped ahead of Athletes in Action 21-2 in the first five minutes and went on to a 67-34 halftime lead.
Senior Missy West finished with 15 points off the bench.
Chantel Mize led Athletes in Action with 23 points - including seven 3-pointers - and Crystal Carpenter added 21 points.
