Junior forward Alison Sanders scored two goals as Duke defeated Florida International, 2-1, at University Park Sunday afternoon. The win ended the Blue Devils' losing streak at four games and was the Golden Panthers first home loss this season.
Duke improved to 5-7 on the season (0-4 Atlantic Coast Conference), while FIU fell to 7-3 overall (2-1 Sun Belt).
Both teams played to a scoreless tie in the first with the Golden Panthers owning possession of the ball for most of the half. Duke would end that tie four minutes into the second half when Sanders scored on a five yard shot off a cross by senior forward Sarah Pickens.
With less than 13 minutes remaining, Sanders scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal off of a deflection by FIU sophomore goalkeeper Adrienne McWilliams.
The Golden Panthers would get their only goal of the game at the 86:38 mark, when sophomore midfielder Alisa Jonassen headed the ball past Duke sophomore goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir off a cross by sophomore forward Francesca Erigo.
Helgadottir had six saves on the afternoon, while McWilliams stopped 5 shots.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. when they host ACC rival Virginia in the first game of a soccer doubleheader. Duke's men will also take on Virginia at 8:00 p.m.
