Senior forward Tatum Clowney's successful penalty kick in the overtime period lifted No. 11 Clemson to a 1-0 win over Duke in Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer action Friday night. With the loss, the Blue Devils fall to 4-5 overall and 0-3 ACC on the season, while the Lady Tigers improve to 7-1 and 2-1 ACC.
After 90 minutes of scoreless play, the game went to sudden death overtime. Less than 2 minutes into the extra frame, Clemson freshman back Sarah Turner took a shot from 15 yards out. The ball hit off Lady Tiger senior midfielder Tricia Williams and the ball went over the goal. However, a Duke defender was called for a hand-ball in the box and the Lady Tigers were awarded a penalty kick.
Clowney's shot went in the upper right center of the goal, past Duke sophomore goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir.
The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday when they face No. 14 Florida State at 1 p.m.
