Duke freshman Kelly McCain picked up two wins today to advance to Saturday's women's singles semifinals at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club.
McCain upset No. 1 seed Jessica Lehnhoff 6-2, 6-3 in tonight's quarterfinals to advance to tomorrow's semis where she will face top-ranked and third-seeded Bea Bielik of Wake Forest. McCain will be playing in her second national semifinal in as many tournaments this season. Last month she reached the final four of the Rivera Women's All-American Championships (which Lehnhoff won). McCain improves to 8-2 this season and Lehnhoff falls to 11-1. "I am pretty excited right now," said McCain. "Everything is clicking as I am playing pretty well right now. I was able to jump out to an early lead against Jessica and had the momentum from the start. Tomorrow will be a very tough match against Bielik."
This is the second straight year that a Blue Devil has reached the National Indoor semis. Last season Kathy Sell and Ansley Cargill reached the semis and Cargill eventually made the final. Duke's Karin Miller one this tournament as a freshman in 1997 and since then two other freshmen have also won the Omni Hotels National Indoor title. Duke's Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) picked up a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Alexis Gordon in the first round of the singles consolation, while Julie DeRoo fell 3-6, 1-6 to Jessica Rush of Northwestern. Johnson then fell 5-7, 6-0, 5-7 to Harvard's Courtney Bergman after leading 5-0 in the third set. This event, presented by The Dallas Morning News and hosted by SMU, is the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament and is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first events - the Riviera Women's and ITA Men's All-American Championships - were held last month, and the third event is season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from Omni Hotels Regional Championships held across the country during last month, the ITA National Small College champions, the winners of the ITA and Riviera All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 10,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the Omni Hotels Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships. This event was inaugurated in 1978 (in Houston).
