GREENSBORO, N.C. - Duke's Alana Beard and Monique Currie garner this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.
Beard, a sophomore guard earns ACC Player of the Week recognition after averaging 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 3.5 steals in leading Duke to two road victories over Virginia and Georgetown. The Shreveport, La, native shot .727 (16 for 22) from the field, .750 (3 for 4 ) from 3-point range and .800 (4 for 5 ) from the free throw line in the two wins.
Against Virginia, Beard posted a team-best 23 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, three steals and one block while hitting 9 of 10 field goals. Against Georgetown, Beard recorded 16 points, dished out eight assists, grabbed three rebounds, had four steals and one blocked shot.
Beard is averaging 17.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 4.2 steals, while hitting 60 percent of her field goals in nine games.
Rookie of the Week honors are claimed for the third time by Duke freshman Monique Currie. In Duke's two wins, Currie averaged 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and hit .571 percent of her field goals.
At Virginia, the Washington D.C., native recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She hit 6 of 10 field goals, had one assist and one steal in 23 minutes. At Georgetown, she posted a team-best 17 points and five rebounds on 6 of 11 field goals. Currie notched two steals and hit 5 of 6 free throws in only 27 minutes.
Currie is averaging 14.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.1 steals, while hitting 54 percent of her field goals.
Duke, which is 7-2 and winner of its last four, will be off until Dec. 16, when the Blue Devils will host UNC Greensboro at 8:00 PM in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
