"We played pretty well and I was glad to see there wasn't any let down after the big victory at Florida on Wednesday," said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. "Florida State is a lot better than its ranking and is one of the top four teams in the ACC. The match was a lot closer than the 7-0 final score indicated."
Duke opened play by quickly winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Blue Devils duo of Katie Granson and Hillary Adams won at the number three position, as they posted an 8-3 victory over Marina Raic/Natalie Carratala. Then, the 35th-ranked team of Kathy Sell and Ansley Cargill downed Nanette Duxin/Alida Gallovits to clinch the doubles point with an 8-3 victory. At the number one spot, the third-ranked duo of Amanda Johnson and Megan Miller teamed to defeat 38th-ranked Jessica Balbuena/Samantha Schoeffel, 8-5.
The Blue Devils swept through all six singles matches to earn the 7-0 victory. Johnson, a freshman ranked 18th in the nation, got things rolling as she easily disposed of Balbuena 6-1, 6-0 in less than an hour, while Sell, a senior ranked 15th overall, won 6-4, 6-3 over Christina Denny at the number four slot. The victory for Johnson improved her to 12-0 overall in dual match play. Sophomore Prim Siripipat (Mexico, Mo.) clinched the match for the Blue Devils at the No. 6 singles position with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Riac.
The final three spots were won in three sets by the Blue Devils-- 2nd-ranked Cargill won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 over 68th-ranked Gallovits at No. 1 singles, 50th-ranked Miller won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 over Schoeffel at No. 2 singles, and Adams defeated Christy Travis 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 at the No.5 position. The victory for Cargill, a freshman out of Atlanta, Ga., improves her to 30-2 on the season.
Duke has a very important week ahead as the Blue Devils will play five matches in the next seven days and of the five matches, four are ACC contests. The schedule includes a match at North Carolina on Monday at 3:00 PM, a home match against South Alabama on Wednesday at 12:00 PM, a conference match at N.C. State on Friday at 12:00 PM, and then back-to-back home matches Saturday and Sunday against Maryland and Virginia respectively. Both matches are scheduled for 12:00 PM. All home matches will be played outside at the Duke Tennis Stadium unless inclement weather moves the contest inside to the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
