ORLANDO, Fla. - The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) women's tennis championship got rolling on Thursday as the top-seeded Duke Blue Devils blanked ninth-seeded Maryland, 4-0, at the Lake Cane - Marsha Park & Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.
Second-ranked Duke improved to 22-1 overall and continues its best start in the school history, while Maryland concludes its season with a 6-13 record. The Blue Devils will have Friday off and will play again on Saturday at 10:00 AM against the winner of the fourth-seeded Florida State/fifth-seeded Georgia Tech match. FSU and GT will play at 9:00 AM on Friday.
"We wanted to make a statement for the rest of the weekend here with our play today," said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. "We wanted to get it over as fast as possible to. It is supposed to get warmer as the week goes on. If you are playing a four-hour match and it is 85 degrees, it will wear you out towards the end of the weekend. We can take advantage of the day off on Friday."
The Blue Devils quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point as Ansley Cargill/Megan Miller downed Delila Causevic/Emily Marker, 8-3, at the number one position and Kathy Sell/Katie Granson cruised to an 8-2 victory over Olivia Dubovikov/Chloe Chavardes at the third spot. Duke's second seeded doubles duo of Amanda Johnson/Hillary Adams did not finish their match against Catherine Valantine after the Blue Devils clinched the point.
Singles action was much like the doubles as the Blue Devils quickly won three matches to clinch the 4-0 victory over the Terrapins. At the sixth position, sophomore Prim Siripipat (Mexico, Mo.) won first as she downed Chavardes, 6-1, 6-2 and Johnson, a freshman ranked 13th nationally, defeated Valantine, 6-1, 6-3.
Duke's Cargill, ranked second nationally, then picked up the match-clinching victory with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Causevic.
The Blue Devils are going for their 14th consecutive ACC Championship.
