DURHAM, N.C. -- Junior forward Alison Sanders scored two goals as 17th-ranked Duke University made first-year head coach Robbie Church's debut a successful one with a 3-0 shutout victory over visiting Davidson College in the season-opener for both teams on Friday night at Koskinen Stadium.
Sanders put the Blue Devils ahead 1-0 with an unassisted goal at the 21:45 mark of the opening half. Sanders' second goal, which came off an assist from senior forward Sarah Pickens, pushed the lead to 2-0 less than 13 minutes into the second half. Sanders now has nine career goals, with four serving as game-winners.
Junior forward Brigid Bowdell accounted for the final margin with an unassisted goal at the 85:57 mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir was credited with one save in the match, pushing her career shutout total to 6.5. Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Hobart registered seven saves in the match for the Wildcats.
Duke outshot Davidson by a 17-2 count on the night.
Duke opens ACC play at home on Sunday against Maryland at 1:00 p.m. Davidson travels to meet South Carolina on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
