Duke freshman forward Casey McCluskey scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals, leading the Blue Devils to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against Missouri in the second game of the Duke adidas Women's Soccer Classic at Koskinen Stadium this evening.
McCluskey tied the game at 2-2 with 31 minutes to play and, 11 minutes later, took a pass from senior forward Sarah Pickens and slammed the winning goal past Missouri sophomore goalkeeper Megan Duncan. It was McCluskey's third career goal and second game-winner in as many games.
"It was a huge win for us, to be able to come back from the 2-1 deficit," said Duke head coach Robbie Church. "I'm very impressed with how we didn't get down, but really fought back. It's a very critical time in the season, so this was a great win."
Missouri was led by Duncan, who had nine saves in the Tigers' first loss of the season, and freshman midfielder Lacy Moore and sophomore forward Adrienne Davis, who each scored one goal in the contest.
Junior midfielder Carly Fuller also scored for the Blue Devils, who outshot the Tigers 19-7. Sophomore goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir was credited with one save in her 10th-career win.
With the victory, Duke improved to 3-2 (0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), while Missouri fell to 5-1 (0-0 Big 12) on the season.
In opening contest, No. 1 North Carolina pounded Georgia, 9-0 behind a hat trick from sophomore forward Alyssa Ramsey and two goals each from sophomore forward Elizabeth Ball and freshman striker Anne Morrell.
The Tar Heels improved to 4-0 (0-0 ACC), while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-2-1 in 2001.
The Duke adidas Women's Soccer Classic will conclude on Sunday when North Carolina takes on Missouri in the 1:00 p.m. game and Duke battles Georgia at 3:00 p.m.
