WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Duke women's soccer team defeated instate rival and ACC foe Wake Forest, 2-1 in sudden death, Saturday night at Spry Stadium. Casey McCluskey scored her fourth game-winning goal and Brigid Bowdell scored her second goal in as many games.
Just 37 seconds into overtime, Gwendolyn Oxenham assisted McCluskey for her 10th goal of the season and 22nd point when she shot from 10 yards out from the left side of the field.
The Demon Deacons scored first when Alena Thom kicked the ball to Alli Hunt, who crossed it to Sarah Kozey. From the left side of the field, Kozey shot the ball past Duke's goalkeeper, Thora Helgadottir, into the right side of the net at the 31:53 mark .
But, the Blue Devils would respond right before halftime. At the 44:05 mark Bowdell dribbled the ball past the goal and then the ball rolled into the goal to tie the game, 1-1.
The Blue Devils (8-8-2, 2-3-2) have completed the regular season. Their next match is on Thursday, Nov. 7 at the ACC Tournament at a time and against a team to be determined.
