Greensboro, N.C. - ACC regular-season champion North Carolina led the 2002 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer teams with five players on the first and second team combined. Clemson, Duke, Maryland, and Virginia had three selections apiece followed by NC State and Wake Forest with two each. Florida State had one player named to the squad.
Duke's sophomore midfielder Casey McCluskey and junior goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir were named to the All-ACC First Team, while senior midfielder Liz Wagner was named to the second team. Defender Kate Seibert and forward Carolyn Riggs were named to the All-Freshman Team.
Clemson's Deliah Arrington, a senior forward from Pawleys Island, S.C., won the ACC Player of the Year award. She is the Tigers leading scorer with 15 goals. She also leads the team in points with 37. Arrington is a four-time first-team All-ACC selection.
North Carolina's Lindsay Tarpley was named ACC Rookie of the Year. Tarpley is North Carolina's leading scorer with 11 goals and 12 assists. She also leads the Tar Heels with four game-winning goals.
Shannon Higgins-Cirovski of Maryland was named ACC Coach of the Year after being inducted, as a player, into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on October 14 of this year. This is her second ACC Coach of the Year award, having also won the honor in 1999. This season, she has led the Terrapins to its most regular season victories since 1997, with 11.
The 2002 ACC All-Freshmen team was also announced with Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia all leading the way with two selections. Clemson, Florida State, and Wake Forest had one selection apiece.
