Top-Ranked Duke Hosts Charleston Southern on Monday...
After having the last seven days off for final exams, the top-ranked Duke women's basketball team (7-0) will get back in to action on Monday with a 7:00 PM contest against Charleston Southern (4-2) in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The CSU contest marks the first of two home games this week as the Blue Devils will also host Florida International on Wednesday at 7:00 PM before heading home for Christmas. Senior Michele Matyasovsky returned to practice on Wednesday and is expected to return to the starting lineup after missing the Saint Joseph's game with a stinger in her left arm.
The game will be aired on the Duke Radio Network (WDNC-AM 620) with Steve Barnes calling the play-by-play and Missy Anderson doing the color.
A Look At Charleston Southern...
Duke and Charleston Southern will meet for the second time in school history on Monday in Durham. The Blue Devils and Lady Buccaneers meet back on Dec. 21, 1994 in Durham as Duke won 101-57.
Charleston Southern enters the contest with a 4-2 record. Head Coach Stephanie Yelton is in her second year at CSU (12-16 in 2001-02). CSU is coming off three consecutive victories over Jacksonville (59-54), Savannah State Univ. (79-49) and Voorhees College (88-51.
Undefeated Starts...
For only the seventh time in school history, Duke has bolted out to a 7-0 record on the season. Since Coach G arrived in 1992-93, Duke has four of the seven undefeated marks.
Duke vs. Big South...
Duke owns an all-time record of 18-4 against Big South opponents--- Liberty (2-0), Charleston Southern (1-0), Elon (2-4), Radford (3-0), UNC Asheville (9-0) and Winthrop (1-0).
Winning Streak...
Duke owns a 15 game home winning streak dating back to last season. In ACC games only, the Blue Devils have won 11 consecutive home contests. Duke has not lost more than two games at home in one season since the 1995-96 season.
Balanced Scoring Attack...
Of Duke's 10 active players on the roster, all 10 are averaging 4.7 points or greater with Alana Beard being the only player averaging more than 15 points a game (22.7). Eight of the 10 players have scored 10 or more points in at least one contest.
Domination At Home...
So far this season, Duke has played three games at home. In those three games, Duke is averaging 106.0 points a game, shooting 56.9 percent from the field, 42.9 from 3-point range and 76.6 from the free throw line. The Blue Devils are outrebouding its opponents 48.3 to 21.7 (+26.7), averaging 28.0 assists, 16.3 steals and 4.3 blocks in those three games. Duke is outscoring opponents by a 57.0 clip.
A Look at What's Next -- Florida International...
Florida International and Duke have met only once in the history of the two programs. The meeting came on Jan. 1, 1984 in the Dial Classic in Miami, Fla. with the Golden Panthers winning 83-56. FIU advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round last season and finished the season ranked 23rd in the Associated Press poll with a 27-6 record. The Golden Panthers return three starters from last year including senior's Cormisha Cotton and Mandy Shafer. Head Coach Cindy Russo is in her 24th year at FIU.
Duke vs. Sun Belt...
Duke owns an all-time record of 4-1 against the Sun Belt Conference-- Western Kentucky (1-0), Florida International (0-1), Arkansas State (1-0), Middle Tennessee State (1-0) and South Alabama (1-0).
Beard & Bass Sweep ACC Honors on Dec. 9...
For the third week in a row, Alana Beard was selected ACC Player of the Week on Dec. 9, while freshman Mistie Bass earned ACC Rookie of the Week accolades for the first time of her career after leading Duke to victories over Howard and Saint Joseph's.
Beard, a 5-11 junior guard averaged 22.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 4.0 steals and 1.0 block in two games. The Shreveport, La. native, scored a season-best 29 points, grabbed nine boards, had two assists, one block and three steals in the championship game against Saint Joseph's in only 26 minutes. Beard also recorded 16 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, five steals and one block in only 23 minutes against Howard. Beard garnered MVP honors for the second-straight week, hitting 67 percent of her field goals and going a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
It marks an ACC record ninth time in her career Beard has been selected ACC Player of the Week.
Bass, a Janesville, Wisc., product, made her first two career starts in the Duke Women's Basketball Classic, averaging 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals, 1.5 blocks and 1.0 assists in leading the Blue Devils to the tournament title. The 6-3 center hit 53 percent of her field goals and 72 percent of her free throws in wins over Howard and St. Joseph's. In her first career start against Howard, Bass scored 19 points, had seven rebounds, three blocks, one steal and one assist in 20 minutes of action. Bass also tallied 16 points, six rebounds and three steals in 25 minutes of play against St. Joseph's. The freshman is now the third-leading scorer for Duke, averaging 11.7 points.
The Beard Factor...
In seven games this season, junior Alana Beard is averaging 22.7 points and has scored 20 or more points in five of the seven games. Of her 20-point games, Beard has registered 22 or more points in all five games.
Her 22.7 average ranks 16th in the NCAA, while her 4.0 steals average is 10th.
Duke & The NCAA Stats...
In the NCAA stats posted through games of Dec. 9, Duke ranks fifth in scoring offense (86.3), 15th in scoring defense (51.4), second in scoring margin (34.9), 18th in field goal percentage (48.9), 19th in field goal percentage defense (34.4), 8th in rebounding margin (12.3), fifth in assists (21.6), 14th in steals (13.7) and tied first in won/loss percentage (1.000).
NCAA Season High...
The 128 points scored on Dec. 6 against Howard is the most points scored by a Division I team this season against a Division I opponent. Other top scores this season include-- 116, by Minnesota vs. IPFW (73); 115, by Kansas State vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (37); 114 by West Virginia vs. Robert Morris (45); 111 by Miami-Fla. vs. Morris Brown (44) and 110, by Miami-Ohio vs. Wright State (69).
Blue Devils Claim Back Title...
The Blue Devils regained its Duke Classic title after South Carolina upset Duke last season in the tournament, 87-81 in overtime. Overall, Duke has won the title 12 of the 15 years the Blue Devils have hosted the classic. Only South Carolina (2001), Seton Hall (1991) and Purdue (1990) have defeated Duke in the championship. South Carolina's victory last season broke Duke's streak of nine-consecutive titles.
