DURHAM, N.C. -- The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over 39th-ranked Clemson on Saturday at the Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils improved to 20-3 overall, 7-0 in ACC action and set up a showdown on Sunday against North Carolina (19-3, 7-0 ACC) for the ACC regular season title. The winner will receive the number one seed in next weekend's ACC Championships in Raleigh, N.C.
In doubles action, the Blue Devils kicked off play by taking all three matches easily. Duke's tandem of Kelly McCain/Hillary Adams picked up their second consecutive victory over a ranked opponent with an 8-5 win over 26th-ranked Laurence Jayet/Alix Lacelane. The 42nd-ranked duo of Julie DeRoo/Amanda Johnson knocked off Anna Savitskaya/Anna Dolinska (8-4) to improve to 13-1 on the season and the Blue Devil team of Susie Abromeit/Katie Granson downed Richele LeSaldo/Milena Stanoycheva (8-5) to improve to 12-1.
Duke quickly went up 3-0 in the match as 26th-ranked DeRoo downed Ana Stiglic (6-1, 6-0) at number three and senior Ioana Plesu knocked off Laurene Jayet (6-2, 6-0). Third-ranked McCain of Duke then clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over 26th-ranked Lacelarie to put the Blue Devils up 4-0.
At the second position, 30th-ranked Johnson defeated 102nd-ranked Savitskaya (6-4, 6-2) to give the Blue Devils a 5-1 advantage. Clemson got on the board at the number six position with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 win by Stanoycheva over Granson, but the 77th-ranked Saras Arasu closed out the match with a straight set victory (6-2, 6-4) over Ioana Paun.
The victory for the Blue Devils is the 19 consecutive ACC regular season win and Duke has won 100 of its last 101 ACC regular season contests. In overall games against ACC opponents, Duke has won 133 of the last 134 contests dating back to the 1988-89 season.
Duke will host seventh-ranked North Carolina on Sunday at 1:00 PM. The match will mark senior day for Plesu and the winner of the match will receive 1.5 points towards the Carlyle Cup, a year long competition between the Blue Devils and Tar Heels.
