SKILLMAN, N.J. - The field for the 2002 Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's All-American Championships has been set for the October 5-13 event at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Three Blue Devils will participate in the main draw as sophomore Kelly McCain and junior Amanda Johnson received invitations in singles and Hillary Adams/McCain received an invite for doubles.
Highlighting this year's event are 17 returning ITA All-American in the Oct. 10-13 main draw of singles as well as six returning ITA All-American doubles teams. Eighteen of the top 19 players in the country have been selected for the main draw, including Tennessee's Vilmarie Castellvi, who was voted No. 1 in the preseason Omni Hotels national singles rankings earlier this week. McCain
McCain, a Tampa, Fla. product, is ranked fifth in the preseason ITA poll and looks to continue her excellent play at the Riviera All-American. Last season, McCain advanced to the Final Four of the tournament. Johnson, a junior native of Bettendorf, Iowa, is ranked tied for 15th in singles and advanced to the Elite Eight in last year's All-American.
As a freshman at Duke last season, McCain registered a 32-8 singles record and was ranked as high as third nationally. She earned ITA All-America honors in singles and doubles as McCain teamed with Adams to advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Individual Tournament. Johnson, a two-time ITA All-America selection, notched a 25-8 singles mark and owns a 63-12 overall record in two years with the Blue Devils.
For the first time since 1999, Duke had a doubles team receive an invitation to the main draw with Adams/McCain. The tandem is coming off an Elite Eight trip at the 2002 NCAA Individual Tournament and a 14-7 overall record. The last Duke duo to receive main draw invitations was Karen Goldstein/Vanessa Webb.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships are the first of three national championship events at the Division I level during the 2002-03 collegiate tennis season (followed by the Omni Hotels/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May). The Oct. 10-13 main draw is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player (32 doubles) prequalifying tournament is Oct. 5-6 at UCLA and four players and doubles teams will advance from there to the Oct. 8-9 64-player qualifying tournament at Riviera (where eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the main draw). The men's counterpart, the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships, will be taking place at the same time at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships date back to 1983 when Georgia's Lisa Spain won the inaugural title. Florida's Jessica Lehnhoff swept last year's singles and doubles titles (with Lindsay Dawaf). Lehnhoff beat Wake Forest's Bea Bielik, who made waves at this year's U.S. Open, in last year's quarterfinals. Stanford boasts the most singles and doubles champions at this event with a total of eight.
The famous Riviera Tennis Club has played host to this event since 1988 (it also hosted an intercollegiate women's championship from 1986-88).
