DURHAM, N.C. - Sixth-ranked Duke knocked off 54th-ranked Purdue, 6-1, on Sunday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in women's tennis action. The Blue Devils improve to 11-1 overall, while the Boilermakers fall to 4-5.
Duke cruised in doubles action to take a 1-0 advantage by winning all three matches. The 21st-ranked duo of Julia Smith/Katie Granson made quick work of Amy Walgenbach/Shawna Zuccarini (8-1) at No. 3 to get everything started. Then, 16th-ranked McCain/Adams downed Lara Burgarello/Melissa Woods (8-4) at No. 2 and second-ranked Amanda Johnson/Julie DeRoo knocked off Gretchen Haynor/Missy Wright (8-5) at No. 1.
In singles action, Duke won five out of six matches to take home the 6-1 victory. Top-ranked McCain easily won 6-0, 6-0 at the top slot over Haynor and 22nd-ranked Amanda Johnson also won 6-1, 6-1 over Zuccarini. The victory for McCain is her 10th consecutive dual match win this season.
Other Blue Devils taking home singles victories on the day were 111th-ranked Granson, 61st-ranked DeRoo and 37th-ranked Arasu.
The Blue Devils will next travel to Raleigh, N.C. as Duke will open up ACC action on Mar. 5 against N.C. State.
