GoDuke.com: How as the transition from High School to college been for you in both academics and athletics?
Allison Lipsher: I guess it started off a little rough with the games against Tennessee and Florida, but I'm used to it by now. I like it and it's a whole different level of soccer. [Academics] Obviously, Duke is one of the top schools and it has really good classes, really hard classes.
GoDuke.com: How much different is the soccer in Hawaii than in college?
Allison Lipsher: I think from anywhere to college is just a whole different level. I mean, Hawaii, we're a smaller state. I think we have a pretty decent level of soccer, but anywhere you go, the level is going to be different.
GoDuke.com: What has been the hardest for you during the transition from high school to college?
Allison Lipsher: I think probably the combination of academics and soccer. It's a hard thing to balance as is, and when you have a really good soccer school and a really good academic school it just makes it that much harder.
GoDuke.com: Heading into the NCAA Tournament, how excited are you to travel to Charlottesville, Va.
Allison Lipsher: I'm really excited. I mean, obviously we're not ecstatic about our draw, and we're bummed that we didn't get seeded, but I mean, you can't ask for a better site than Virginia. It's going to be really good games.
GoDuke.com: I know the team was a little sad that they were not hosting the first round. Does that give you a little more motivation to come out and prove to people that ya'll deserved a host site?
Allison Lipsher: It definitely does, especially because they [Virginia] beat UNC and we came so close to beating them and beating UNC. It's all very motivational.
GoDuke.com: What do you know about VCU?
Allison Lipsher: Well they're a very attack-oriented team, they possess the ball well. We're just going to have to look to disrupt the way they play and try to play our own game as well.
GoDuke.com: How nice was it to have your team travel to Hawaii with you in September?
Allison Lipsher: It was nice. I think everyone had a really good time. It was good to go home, too, especially because I'm from so far away. It was fun; it was kind of like I got to take everyone on a trip with me, like a vacation. It was great.
GoDuke.com: What was the highlight for you during the trip to Hawaii?
Allison Lipsher: I got to go surfing. I miss surfing a lot.
GoDuke.com: Who was the best surfer of the group, besides yourself of course?
Allison Lipsher: I'd have to say Carla [Overbeck]. Carla was pretty good.
GoDuke.com: Did you grow up in Hawaii?
Allison Lipsher: I've lived there my whole life...Yes, I was born there.
GoDuke.com: What is the best thing about living in Hawaii?
Allison Lipsher: It's just a great place to grow up. There's just such a laid-back attitude about everything, and everyone is so friendly and so warm. It's a really, really good place to grow up in.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any idea what you want to major in or do after graduation?
Allison Lipsher: I was thinking maybe Oceanography, but I am not sure yet. I'm pretty undecided. But I'll figure it out.
GoDuke.com: What are your hobbies other than soccer?
Allison Lipsher: When I was at home I used to go surfing whenever I could. I don't know, the normal stuff: Go to movies, hang out with friends, stuff like that. I like to read.
GoDuke.com: Do you play any other sports that you like to play other than soccer?
Allison Lipsher: I played basketball for the first time my senior year [in high school], but I'm pretty bad.
GoDuke.com: What made you choose the position goalkeeper?
Allison Lipsher: I mean I guess when I was little, everyone played goalkeeper. You know, we just rotated in. And so I don't know, maybe I was just lazy or something, but it just kind of stuck with me.
GoDuke.com: Is there a mentality that you have to have as a goalkeeper other than other positions?
Allison Lipsher: Probably that goalkeepers are kind of weird. I've heard that a lot! I don't know about anything. I mean, I'm sure with enough training everyone has the same mentality to be a goalkeeper.
