CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Jackie Rodriguez won three individual events Friday, but it was enough to overtake conference-foe North Carolina. The Tar Heel men defeated the Blue Devils 84-213 while the Carolina women won 94-199. With the loss, the Duke women fall to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the men drop to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in the ACC.
Rodriguez earned wins in the 1000 freestyle (10:12.55), 100 breaststroke (1:05.91) and 200 breaststroke (2:22.19) events. Junior Katie Ness also contributed her fair share, pulling in first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (58.08) and 100 butterfly (58.25) races.
On the men's side, sophomore Kevin Arthofer and seniors John Humphrey and Dave Peck swept the top three places in the 100 breaststroke, while junior Billy Pearce took first in the 100 freestyle in 47.93.
The Blue Devils return to action Friday, November 19 at the Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Va.
With the wins, both North Carolina teams improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. Each win was worth one point to Carolina in the 2004-05 Carlyle Cup standings, the all-sports trophy between the two teams sponsored by Carlyle and Company Jewelers. The Tar Heels now lead the current Carlyle Cup race, 5-3, heading into the Duke-Carolina football game in Durham, N.C. on November 20. That game will be worth two points in the standings.
