ATLANTA, Ga. – The Duke swimming and diving team concluded seven days of competition at the ACC Championships Saturday evening.
The Blue Devils' week highlighted by a pair of fourth-place finishes in the women's platform dive (
Josie Zillig) and the women's 200-yard breaststroke (
Kaelyn Gridley), along with a handful of school records and top-10 program mark being set.
Duke's women totaled 432.5 points to place eighth overall, while the Blue Devil men (138 points) took 14th.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- Senior Josie Zillig competed in the women's platform dive and scored a fourth-place finish with 252.65 points.
- Tatum Wall turned in a personal-best showing in the prelims of the women's 50-yard freestyle, clocking a program-best 21.57 to secure her spot in the finals. The senior one-upped her 50 free time in the final, swimming 21.47 to smash her own program record and place fifth overall.
- Wall recorded a personal best and school-record time of 51.18 in the prelims of the women's 100-yard butterfly to secure her spot in the next round. The Ashburn, Virginia, product once again improved her own school record with a faster time in the final, swimming 51.05 to finish eighth.
- Duke took sixth in the women's 200-yard medley relay, with the quartet of junior Ali Pfaff, senior Kaelyn Gridley, freshman Heather White and Wall turning in a time of 1:35.67.
- In the women's 200 free relay, Duke's team of Wall, White, Pfaff and sophomore Clare Logan came in at 1:28.14, earning a sixth-place finish.
- The Blue Devils saw a pair of individual top-10 program marks stem from the men's and women's 800-yard freestyle relays. White clocked 1:47.25 in her 200 leg, while graduate student Justin Wong posted a mark of 1:36.60 in his. Both times rank eighth all-time.
- Junior Milo Shue competed in the men's 50 free and recorded a time of 19.76 seconds. Shue's finish was a personal best in the event and slotted him No. 5 all-time at Duke.
- Wong and senior Austin Simpson logged a pair of top-10 Duke marks in the men's 100 fly and men's 500 free, respectively. Wong moved into No. 3 all-time on the program charts with a finish of 46.52, while Simpson swam 4:25.18 for No. 10 all-time.
- Gridley (100-yard breaststroke) and Pfaff (100-yard backstroke) posted a pair of Duke records en route to placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Pfaff swam a program-best 51 seconds flat in the 100 breast prelims, then reset her mark with a finish of 50.73 in the final. Gridley powered to the wall in 57.83 to take over the top spot on the Duke charts in the women's 100 back.
- The foursome of Pfaff, Gridley, White and Wall recorded another strong outing in the women's 400 medley relay, clocking a school record 3:28.64 en route to a fifth-place finish.
- Wong tallied his third top-10 program mark of the week – this one coming in the men's 200 fly. The Mill Valley, California, veteran swam a collegiate best of 1:43.25 and moved up to No. 2 all-time in program lore.
- Junior Jack Smith improved his position on the Duke charts with formidable showings in the 100 (52.64) and 200 breast (1:55.77), slotting himself No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, in the program record book.
- Wall's stellar prelim race (47.22) in the women's 100 free earned the senior her third school record of the week and a spot in the final. The Ashburn, Virginia, product went on to place seventh overall, touching in 47.58.
- Pfaff improved her school-record time in the women's 200 back with a personal best of 1:51.45 in the consolation.
- Gridley clocked 2:05.55 in the women's 200 breast en route to placing fourth overall, matching the Blue Devils' highest placement of the week. On the men's side, Smith posted a time of 1:56.92 to move into No. 8 all-time at Duke.
