DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Director of Swimming and Diving
Brian Barnes announced Wednesday the addition of
Colin Gibson to the Blue Devils' coaching staff ahead of the upcoming 2026-27 season. Gibson comes to Durham following three seasons as a student assistant with the University of Michigan swimming and diving team.
"We are thrilled to welcome Colin Gibson to Duke swimming and diving," said Barnes. "Colin's enthusiasm is contagious. His energy was unmatched during our search. His commitment to excellence is evident in everything he does. The strong recommendations he received from highly-respected coaches across the sport speak volumes about his character, work ethic and ability to positively influence student-athletes."
During his time with the Wolverines, Gibson assisted the coaching staff, director of operations and student-athletes with daily functions of the program. His duties included attending practice sessions, aiding in administrative activities and facility upkeep, along with helping organize logistics and facilitate areas of team travel. Gibson also assisted with the collection and distribution of film and served as a mentor to the program's student managers.
"I am incredibly blessed and honored to have the opportunity to coach at Duke," said Gibson. "Duke's elite academic traditions and commitment to developing student-athletes, both in the pool and the classroom, make it truly a special place. I would like to thank head coach
Brian Barnes and everyone associated with the Duke swimming and diving program for this opportunity and their trust in me. I also want to express my gratitude for all of the coaches, staff and athletes at the University of Michigan and Club Wolverine for investing in my growth and supporting me throughout this journey. I could not be more excited to be a Blue Devil, to start this next chapter of my life and to get to work. Go Duke!"
In addition to his tenure at the University of Michigan, Gibson also spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Club Wolverine swimming club. There, he provided individualized instruction and mentorship to numerous high school student-athletes, while also collaborating with the coaching staff on strategy, meet and practice setup and facility organization. Gibson worked at the Michigan Swim Camp (2024-2025) and Wolverine Swim Clinics (2024), contributing to logistical procedures and camp operations, coaching and mentorship of young swimmers and film capture.
Gibson was a student-athlete on the swimming and diving team at McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois, from 2022-23 before transferring to Michigan ahead of the 2023-24 academic year. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in sport management (sport policy and analytics concentration) and a minor in education for empowerment in May 2026.
