BLOOMINGTON, IND.-After falling behind 1-0 after doubles action, the 10th-ranked Duke women's tennis team swept the singles competition as the Blue Devils went on to defeat 36th-ranked Indiana, 6-1, on Sunday in Bloomington, Ind. With the victory, Duke improves to 4-1.
In doubles play, Duke got off to the early advantage by winning at the third position as Tory Zawacki and Saras Arasu knocked off Dora Vastag and Laura McGaffigan, 8-6. The other two matches went down to the wire with Duke's Amanda Johnson and Julia Smith falling, 9-7, to 24th-ranked Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran at the first slot.
The one doubles point came down to the second position as Indiana's Sarah Batty and Martina Grimm went up early 7-2, but Duke's tandem of Jennifer Zika and Kristin Cargill fought back to even the match at 7-7. The Hoosiers went up 8-7, but the Blue Devils came back to even the match at 8-8, but Indiana would go on to win the tiebreaker and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Duke came out on fire in the singles action as the Blue Devils quickly took a 2-1 lead as Cargill and Smith each won easily at the sixth and fourth positions, respectively. Cargill, a sophomore from Atlanta, Ga., knocked off Cecile Perton, 6-1, 6-1, and Smith, a 95th-ranked sophomore from Windlesham, England, defeated McGaffigan, 6-4, 6-1.
Zika, a 64th-ranked freshman from Wels, Austria, then battled back from 3-0 leads by Batty from Indiana to win 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 at the third position to put the Blue Devils up 3-1.
Duke next received three-set victories from Johnson, Zawacki and Arasu to give the Blue Devils a 6-1 team victory. Fifth-ranked Johnson notched a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win over 48th-ranked Vastag, 89th-ranked Zawacki knocked off 81st-ranked Tran, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 and Arasu won 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 over Schlukebir.
The Blue Devils will next host Old Dominion on Feb. 19 at 4:00 p.m. and Northwestern on Feb. 21 at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will be played in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
